Background : Boyd Thomas TAPPER enlisted into the Citizen Military Forces as Private N93724 on the 15th December 1941 with the 30th Battalion. He then discharged from the CMF and enlisted into the Australian Imperial Forces on 05/02/1942 and was sent to the 9th Pioneer Training Battalion in Dubbo for instruction on 19/05/1942. On 12/07/1942 BT TAPPER was transferred to Bathurst with the 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion and offically taken on strength with the 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion on the 19/08/1942. He embarked Brisbane on 02/11/1942 with the 2/2 Pioneer Battalion on the H.M.T. Duntroon arriving Port Moresby, New Guinea on 10/11/1942. The following day, 11/11/1942 he was transferred to the 2/14th Field Company Royal Australian Engineers. He was promoted to Acting Corporal on the 20/07/1943 and Corporal on the 20/10/1943. Cpl TAPPER contracted Malaria whilst in New Guinea and was eventually evacuated back to Australia on 15/02/1944 embarking Port Moresby on the ship Paul Chandler arriving in Brisbane on 20/02/1944. He was discharged on 09/11/1944 as being Medically Unfit for further service.
