Overseas 2016 Borneo. Tour comments

Cary Sandell (grandson of VX73689 C. A. R. Douglas).

I do not have a direct connection with the Borneo Campaign as my grandfather fought with the second forming of the 2/2 Pioneer Battalion in New Guinea. My knowledge comes primarily through researching for the website and my large military library. Whilst doing this, I found that P.O.W.s had died in Borneo after been sent there by the Japanese and I always wondered if their sacrifice had simply been overlooked and forgotten.

I mainly went on the tour to gather more firsthand information, photos, etc for the website but quickly discovered that the locals in Sabah, Borneo had never forgotten about the P.O.W.s sent there; especially those who suffered and died on the Death Marches from Sandakan to Ranau. Many locals had been murdered because they helped the P.O.W.s when they could.

The amount of information collected by the group has taken nearly 6 weeks to sort and present on the website. Nor is that the end. I expect tour comments and more photos to be added by other members of the group.

The trip was an experience I will never forget.
