A CHRISTMAS STORY. Submitted by WX16572 Neil MacPherson (William's Force, Burma Railway, 2/2 Pioneer Battalion). Neil spotted this in his morning paper (entries were of unusual Christmas dinners restricted to 50 words) and thought it relevant as the Awa Maru had a number of 2/2 Pioneers aboard. The entry only consisted of the one paragraph below.
1944, Australian P.O.W.s, Burma Railway survivors, crammed on wooden shelves in the Hellship Awa Maru Singapore awaiting transport to Japan, our 11th sweat drenched day. The rumours that kept our morale high were that we would get a double ration of rice today, false just another day to our hosts.
