Markham River near Nadzab, New Guinea. 1943-09-05. Aerial view of members of 8 Platoon, 2/6th Field Company using decking placed across folding boats (folboats) to move members of 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion across the deep part of the river (centre of photograph). Members of the 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion can be seen wading across the anabranch to folding rubber boats which were dragged by means of tripods, ropes and pulleys towards the main river. (Donor L. Markham River near Nadzab, New Guinea. 1943-09-05. Aerial view of members of 7 Platoon, 2/6th Field Company using ropes with tripods and pulleys (like a flying fox), to move rubber boats across the anabranches towards the main river. Members of 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion can be seen (on the left) dispersed in attack formation on the banks and in the surrounding bushes. The main deep crossing is to the right of the photograph. Here 8 Platoon, 2/6th Field Company placed decking across folding boats (folboats) to form a bridge. This completed the move of the whole 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion, hundreds of native carriers and the engineers across the river in one day. (See also image number AWM 100544) (Donor L. Waterhouse). 1943-09-15. Lae Salamaua isolated. Pioneers working knee-deep in mud and slime construct a road for motor transport 70 minutes after the Australians had landed north west of Lae. To get a foundation the Pioneers laid out tree trunks. Bulldozers and caterpillar tractors went straight into the work of making roads, laying steel mesh strips over soft earth and transporting supplies. AWM id no. 015706
